BRUCE THOMPSON
Year of Birth:1957
Nationality: New Zealand
Role: Mast and Spars Principal Designer

Although only officially being enrolled in the America’s Cup with BMW Oracle since 2000, Bruce has been involved in AC rig design for over 15 years. After graduating from Auckland University Engineering School in 1979 he went on to join Sparcraft UK Ltd, based in Lymington as Head of Design. With his help, this fledgling company at the time has boomed and his impressive record in rig design began.

To date his list of achievements include 120 foot maxi’s, Swan’s, Beneteau’s, Whitbread 60 yachts, Farr 40’s and consultant on various America’s Cup campaigns. Not only do Bruce’s rigs not fall down but they are widely regarded to incorporate some of the most advanced technology in the world and as a result his ‘rigs’ have won many high profile races.

In 2000, BMW Oracle enlisted Bruce fulltime as their principal rig designer where he helped them to the Louis Vuitton Cup finals in 2003. Now with TEAMORIGIN and with a clean slate on which to design a new rig, it will be very exciting to see what Bruce can produce.

Why you joined TEAMORIGIN:

“Despite being a Kiwi, I can appreciate the depth of maritime tradition in the UK and the America’s Cup is one of the few trophies they have never held, despite hosting the first ever race. By joining TEAMORIGIN I hope to help them bring the Auld Mug back to British shores.”
