Respected worldwide as one of the most innovative America’s Cup sail designers, Mickey Ickert, responsible for many cutting edge and performance-enhancing spinnakers and gennakers, is a key addition to the TEAMORIGIN sailing team, and is twice a winner of the America’s Cup.
In 1989, after completing his apprenticeship in German, Mickey joined North Sails NZ as sail designer and production manager. He has previously worked with two Whitbread campaigns, before joining Team New Zealand as downwind sail designer in San Diego. He then designed sails for four Whitbread 60s, and worked with a range of campaigns including IOR / IMS boats Kenwood Cup, One Ton worlds, ILC 40 Worlds, Mumm 36, Admirals Cup, Olympic Class sails, and local Keelboats. Mickey also designed specialist sails for Club Med in The Race, the fastest round the world yacht race.
Amongst other achievements, Mickey has represented Germany in Finn Class dinghies, and is a past holder of European titles in small keelboats. Recent work with North Sails NZ has seen him develop the sail inventory for the new Pindar Open 60, working alongside Mike Sanderson and Juan Kouyoumdjian.
