NEAL MCDONALD
Year of Birth: 1963
Nationality: British
Role: Mainsheet trimmer

Neal is of that special sailing pedigree that has excelled in all disciplines of the sport. Born on the south coast he has been brought up surrounded by boats, so it was only natural that he progressed on to represent his country in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul where he finished sixth in a Flying Dutchman. The following year he won the International 14 world championships and cemented his name as one of sailing’s elite.

To date he has completed five circumnavigations of the globe, twice in the Whitbread race, winning The Race on Club Med and most recently skippering Assa Abloy and then Ericsson racing team in the Volvo Ocean Race finishing second and fifth respectively.

A proud Brit, Neal represented GBR Challenge in 2003 as a trimmer but then was forced to join the Swedes in 2007 through lack of a British team. With the formation of TEAMORIGIN he was at the top of the wish list; not only will his sail setting be crucial but also he has expert knowledge in mast design and maintenance.

Why you joined TEAMORIGIN:

“Sailing is what I do best and Britain is the country I have grown up in and that has served me so well, so the opportunity to represent Britain in the biggest sailing event on the planet did not require very much thought. The depth of sailing talent in Britain is astounding and I look forward to working with a great bunch of guys towards our one common goal – bringing the Cup back to where it belongs”
